In 1978 I had occasion to visit the graves of Nathan and Narcissa Bartlett. I remember
driving up the narrow gravel road along a hillside. On the left, not more than 100 feet
from the road, stood the remains of an old cabin, the chimney and fireplace for the most
part being intact. I was later told by my father, who is a great grandson of Nathan and
Narcissa, that this cabin was their original cabin where they settled upon coming to Tippah
County around 1840 and that my father seemed to remember being told that the Indians in the neighborhood
helped support them that first winter they were there. Indeed we know it must have been
a hectic and trying time because Nathan died rather soon after
arriving, just 11 days prior to the birth of his last child. We walked up a narrow path
a short distance to a small graveyard surrounded by beautiful pine trees. There Nathan
and Narcissa rest together now. This graveyard is located near Dumas in Tippah County,
Mississippi.
